WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, N.C. (WECT) – The Wrightsville Beach Police Department is warning residents about scam calls involving Bitcoin.

Signs for these scam calls include the following:

  • The callers will provide an account/transaction number for you to deposit funds into. Police advise to never use the contact infromation the fraudulent emails from financial insitutions give out and always look up or use a previously known number.
  • The scammers will then tell you to lie to a teller from the bank and say the funds are for a home remodel or to help your child.
  • The scammers will ask to then deposit the funds into a Bitcoin ATM. The caller will provide fake social security numbers to be attached to the account and occasionally give a location of the ATM.
  • The person may then want to remain on the phone with you while you are withdrawing and depositing the funds.

Residents are advised to call the police if they receive any calls as described.
