A resident living in the 500 block of Woodland Court, N.W., on April 6 received a notification stating his computer had been compromised, Vienna police said.
After following instructions to fix the problem, he was notified that his bank account also was compromised.
The resident called the number he was provided for assistance and he was instructed to withdraw funds from his account and deposit them into a Bitcoin ATM. The man later realized this was a scam, police said.
