DENTON, Neb. (KOLN) – The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after a Denton man reportedly lost $55,000 in an online scam.
LSO Chief Deputy Ben Houchin said the 65-year-old victim in the case met a woman on Facebook and after exchanging several messages, she agreed to help him set up a Bitcoin Trust Wallet account. Houchin said when the victim checked his account on Wednesday he discovered all the money was gone.
“We at the sheriff’s office cannot stress enough to everyone please do not give out personal information, passcodes, money or send revealing photos to people you meet on social media,” Houchin said.
Houchin said the sheriff’s office is investigating the case; however, cases like these are difficult to solve and get the money back to the victim.
“We’re working these types of frauds, not just this specific one, but a lot where people are meeting and trusting individuals that they meet and they’re hard to solve, they really are,” Houchin said. “And a lot of times that money is gone, it’s in a different country before you even turn around.”
