Researchers Propose Private Bitcoin Transfers Without a Soft Fork
Shielded Bitcoin would use zero-knowledge proofs and encrypted notes to conceal transfer details without altering consensus rules, though privacy and quantum-resistance questions remain.

Researchers have proposed Shielded Bitcoin, a design for private Bitcoin transfers that would not require a soft fork, according to Cointelegraph.
The approach draws on Zcash-style privacy techniques, using zero-knowledge proofs alongside encrypted notes to keep transaction information hidden while leaving Bitcoin’s consensus rules unchanged.
Researchers have also questioned the proposal’s anonymity protections and resistance to quantum computing threats. Those concerns remain open in the proposed design.
