A Japanese team recorded aerodynamic drag reductions of up to 43.6% with a microscopic surface texture, though full-scale validation remains necessary.

A Japanese research team measured aerodynamic drag reductions of up to 43.6% while testing a textured surface in a magnetic levitation wind tunnel at Tohoku University.
Known as Distributed Micro-Roughness, the surface features microscopic, canyon-like structures intended to limit the growth of Tollmien-Schlichting waves, which can contribute to airflow becoming turbulent.
The results remain experimental. The approach still requires full-scale testing, along with a maintenance plan for the textured surface, before its practical performance can be established.
