Google’s Willow Advance Raises Questions Over Bitcoin’s Quantum Exposure
Edited by Steinar Vigdel Kolnes, Editor, Oslo
Google reports a reduction in quantum-state preparation errors, a hardware advance relevant to the long-term risk of cracking bitcoin wallets.

Google says its Willow quantum chip has reduced errors in preparing specialized states for advanced calculations by roughly a factor of 40. The result addresses a hardware obstacle relevant to potential future attacks on bitcoin wallets.
CoinDesk framed the development as a concern for bitcoin dating to the Satoshi era. The reported improvement concerns quantum-state preparation, rather than a demonstrated ability to break bitcoin’s cryptography.
The advance does not establish that quantum computers can currently crack bitcoin wallets. It marks progress on one technical bottleneck, while the timing and feasibility of such attacks remain uncertain.
