Google Reports 40-Fold Error Reduction in Quantum ‘Magic States’
Edited by Steinar Vigdel Kolnes, Editor, Oslo
Google says its Willow chip reduced errors in quantum computing’s scarce “magic states” by a factor of 40, potentially helping pave the way for smaller, useful machines.

Google says its Willow quantum chip achieved a 40-fold reduction in errors affecting “magic states,” a scarce resource consumed during quantum computations, according to Decrypt.
The result addresses a bottleneck in quantum computing. Improving the reliability of these states could help reduce the resources needed to build smaller machines capable of useful work.
The advance also has implications for encryption: sufficiently powerful quantum computers could threaten systems in use today. The reported result is a step toward that capability, not evidence that Willow can currently break those protections.
