Bitcoin Soft Fork Proposal Puts Focus on Network Upgrade Readiness

Developer Matt Corallo says fixing four legacy Bitcoin bugs could also help restore experience with coordinating soft forks.

A proposed Bitcoin soft fork aimed at addressing four longstanding bugs could serve a broader purpose beyond routine protocol maintenance, according to Bitcoin developer Matt Corallo.
Corallo argues that carrying out a relatively limited upgrade would give developers and other network participants practical experience with the process of reviewing, coordinating and deploying a soft fork.
Bitcoin has gone years without frequent consensus changes, meaning some of the operational knowledge around upgrades has had fewer opportunities to be exercised in practice.
The proposal therefore carries two goals: resolving known legacy issues while testing the ecosystem's ability to manage a carefully scoped consensus change.
