AI Payment Standard x402 Faces Questions Over Disputed Purchases

Major card networks now hold positions in the highest governance tier of x402, a standard used by AI agents to make online payments.
According to Albert Castellana of GenLayer Labs, the standard does not provide a way to dispute a charge. That leaves a gap when an agent pays for something but receives an incorrect or unusable result.
The issue separates successful payment settlement from successful delivery: a transaction can be completed even if the purchase fails to meet the agent’s needs. Castellana’s analysis focuses on what happens after that mismatch occurs.
